Motion Capture

Vision Statement
Aaron, Dylan, Kathleen and Kevin worked as a group for the Motion Capture project.
We created a 3D installation based on the concept of moving light and moving surface. Photographers have tried to capture movement utilizing light for years.
Using the files we saved during the motion capture session at Worley Works (thank you to the dancer) we would like to have the points lit up and move as light would move if time was slowed down. Think of a person holding a flashlight, moving it and waving it around during the slow exposure of the shutter on a camera. Our person does not need to hold the flashlight, the points used to capture movement will give us that. And the final product will not be a still image, but a moving interactive artwork. This is the concept of Real/Unreal Space using time as the denominator. We are also incorporating surface as part of the movement. The piece is created from a piece of fabric suspended over a fan and letting the air of the fan create a ripple effect on the fabric. The image is displayed on the fabric and the movement of the fabric influences the movement of the points of light. The projection projected from above. We experimented with different projection spots, such as from underneath, but we get a larger area of image when projected from above.
The project was created using Processing, Max/MSP Jitter, lua, Maya and Motion Capture. It is definitely an experiment and we are open to taking the project in the direction it leads us.

Creative Concept
Our inspiration comes from long exposure photographs of light, such as the one here. This is a long exposure of flashlights in a blackout in London. We will take this concept to the next level by making the points of the model light up- and letting the light make streaks such as the ones in the photograph as the model moves.
