Memorial Tree
Vision Statement
A collaborative project to build installations in many countries across the world to memorialize all those who have tried or are currently contemplating suicide, and those who have lost anyone to suicide. The project is made up of two parts. The physical installation and a website for students to talk to other students and find help if they need it.
America has developed a very unachievable concept of beauty through advertising manipulation and the worship of celebrities. Women and recently, men are continually confronted with an aestetic of perfection that is unattainable by most average people. Models are much taller and thinner than the average person. They also go to great lengths to maintain a distorted level of physical perfection. My project deals with the American standard of beauty that is unattainable for most people.
Creative Concept
The installation is a tree in the courtyard on campus similar to roadside memorials where students can leave mementos, flowers, and photos of loved ones.
The website is broken up into two parts. The first part is a place for students who are dealing with the death of a friend to find other students going through the same things, as well as to get emotional help to deal with the loss, and to post images or mementos of friends. The other part is for those students who are depressed and may be contemplating suicide to find someone to talk to and professional help.
