Artist and Viewer
Vision Statement
This thesis piece is about the relationship and the duality between the artist and the viewer. The artist observes viewer through the camera in the painting, and the viewer becomes part of the artwork as he or she dictates the composition in the video.
The painting wall represents my personal influences, my family. The video wall represents my professional influences, the viewers of my work. Every person influences what the piece looks like in some way. The painting is a finished painting, created using the aesthetic I have been working in for several years. It includes my painting and a photomontage in a grid format over laid with metal mesh. There is a camera embedded in the painting at eye level. It captures the movement of the viewers face as they view the painting. The video clips are saved and played back in the video montage opposite the painting. The video has the same grid aesthetic as the painting. The video is made up of two channels, the pre-recorded faces that have been saved in a collage, and the viewers as they look the painting.
Creative Concept
One wall is a painting (approximately 54” x 54”) created by weaving canvas, photo montage, and metal mesh. There is a video camera embedded in the painting. One wall is a large blank canvas (approximately 54” x 54”) showing a checkerboard or grid of people viewing the paintings in video. The viewer completes the piece.
